About Course

Course Overview – Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (MitraClip)

This focused course offers an in-depth exploration of transcatheter mitral valve repair using the MitraClip system, designed for interventional cardiologists, echocardiographers, cardiac surgeons, and heart team specialists involved in the care of patients with mitral regurgitation (MR). Participants will learn a stepwise approach to procedural planning, echocardiographic guidance, and clip deployment—alongside strategies for managing challenging anatomies and optimizing long-term outcomes.

Participants will gain the knowledge and technical insight to: Understand the pathophysiology of functional and degenerative mitral regurgitation, and when MitraClip is appropriate Identify ideal anatomical candidates using TEE and 3D imaging to assess leaflet morphology, coaptation depth, flail gap, and jet origin Master step-by-step procedural techniques including transseptal puncture, steerable guide navigation, clip positioning, and deployment Interpret and guide the procedure using real-time TEE imaging, from clip alignment to grasping confirmation Recognize and manage complications, including leaflet detachment, single leaflet device attachment (SLDA), embolization, or residual MR Evaluate procedural success with immediate and follow-up imaging, and integrate with clinical endpoints such as NYHA improvement and LV remodeling Incorporate international best practices, device iterations, and latest trial data (e.g. COAPT, MITRA-FR) into patient selection and procedural planning Delivered through live case videos, interactive image interpretation labs, and multidisciplinary team modules, this course equips participants with the technical skill and imaging fluency needed to safely perform MitraClip repairs in high-risk surgical candidates.

What Will You Learn?

  • By completing the Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (MitraClip) course, you will understand the anatomy and pathophysiology of functional and degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR)
  • Learn how to evaluate patients for MitraClip using transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, including 3D imaging for leaflet assessment and coaptation metrics
  • Master step-by-step procedural techniques: transseptal puncture, guide catheter positioning, clip steering, grasping, and deployment
  • Interpret real-time TEE imaging to guide safe and effective clip placement, ensure adequate MR reduction, and assess procedural endpoints
  • Understand device selection strategies, including single vs multiple clips and newer-generation MitraClip systems
  • Recognize and manage complications such as single leaflet device attachment (SLDA), leaflet injury, embolization, or residual MR
  • Evaluate procedural success and integrate post-procedural surveillance, including imaging, heart failure management, and anticoagulation strategy
  • Apply current evidence and guideline recommendations (e.g., COAPT, MITRA-FR) to optimize patient outcomes in real-world clinical scenarios
  • This course provides a full framework for clinical decision-making, imaging mastery, and technical execution in the safe and effective use of MitraClip for transcatheter mitral valve repair.
